Subsequently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned Rhea Chakraborty and her brother over money laundering allegations in August 2020. The case took a significant turn when the Supreme Court of India allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take charge of the investigation in August 2020. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested Rhea Chakraborty in September 2020, charging her with alleged involvement in the supply of marijuana to Sushant Singh Rajput.

After her arrest, she spent nearly a month in pretrial confinement until October 7, 2020, when she was granted bail by the Bombay High Court. The high court noted that due to her lack of criminal history, there were reasonable grounds to believe that she was not likely to commit further offenses.
